The largest school district in the United States just drew a hard line. No AI tutors. No chatbots. No generative AI for anyone under 14. And every edtech founder, enterprise AI team, and product leader should be paying attention.

By naming AI tutors explicitly alongside chatbots, NYC did not accidentally ban a category it had not thought about. The district considered the tutoring argument and rejected it for younger children. That is a different kind of signal than a blanket tech ban.

The scale matters
